- The list is issued each year by the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) for Central Government offices in Delhi and New Delhi1.
- The dates of Id-ul-Fitr, Id-ul-Zuha, Muharram and Milad-un-Nabi depend on the moon and may move by a day1.
- Banks also close on the second and fourth Saturdays of every month, and on the holidays of their state2.
Who gets these days off
In short
Central Government offices. Republic Day, Independence Day and Gandhi Jayanti are compulsory holidays for all of them; offices outside Delhi choose three more from the list with their local coordination committee1. States and private employers publish their own lists.
- Central Government employees may also take two restricted holidays of their choice from a separate list1.
- Private companies follow the holidays law of their state and their own holiday list. Your appointment letter or HR policy says which days you get: under the Labour Codes, every worker must get an appointment letter3.
Long weekends
In short
Four three-day weekends: Good Friday (26–28 March), Mahavir Jayanti (17–19 April), Id-ul-Zuha (15–17 May) and Diwali (29–31 October). One day of leave turns Republic Day, Holi and Buddha Purnima into four days off.

The count follows the Central Government’s five-day week in Delhi. Many workplaces also work on Saturdays; the calculator counts the working days and hours of any period:
Working hours and overtime
In short
At most 8 hours a day and 48 hours a week, and no more than six days a week. Overtime needs your consent and pays at least double the ordinary rate. On a five-day week a day can run 9.5 hours without overtime, on a four-day week 1234.
- The four Labour Codes took effect on 21 November 2025 and replaced 29 older labour laws3. Working hours, overtime and leave are now in the Occupational Safety, Health and Working Conditions Code, 20205.
- Overtime is counted by the day or by the week, whichever gives the worker more, and the government may cap the total hours of overtime (section 27)5.
- The Code covers establishments with ten or more workers. It does not cover people employed mainly as managers or administrators, or supervisors paid more than ₹18,000 a month5.
Pay for work on a holiday or a weekly off
In short
It depends on your state’s holidays law and your contract. Tamil Nadu’s, for example, gives twice the wages or a substitute holiday6. If an exemption makes you work on your weekly day off, you get as many compensatory holidays within that month or the two after it5.
- No central law sets one rate for work on a festival or national holiday; each state has its own act.
- Overtime on a holiday is still overtime: hours past the daily or weekly limit pay at least double5.
Annual leave
In short
After 180 days of work in a calendar year, a worker earns one day of paid leave for every 20 days worked — 12 days for 240 days. Up to 30 unused days carry over, and you can ask to be paid for your leave at the end of the year5.
- The threshold was 240 days before the Labour Codes4.
- Adolescent workers and those below ground in a mine earn a day for every 15 days worked (section 32)5.
- Holidays that fall within your leave do not count as days of leave.
- If you join after 1 January, you earn leave at the same rate once you have worked a quarter of the days left in the year.
- Leave you asked for and were refused carries over without a limit. When you leave the job, you are paid for the leave due within two working days.
- Casual and sick leave depend on your state’s shops and establishments law and your employer.
