Public holidays in 2027

Long weekends
In short
Six long weekends without taking leave. The longest is at Easter: 26–29 March, 4 days. New Year, 15 March, Whitsun, 20 August and All Saints’ Day each give three days.

Working Saturdays and bridge days
In short
No decree for 2027 yet, so for now there are no working Saturdays. The minister can move working days until 31 October 20261. No holiday in 2027 falls on a Tuesday or Thursday, so there is no classic bridge day to fill.
- Transfers apply to people on the general schedule, Monday to Friday (Mt. 97 (2), 102 (5)). On other schedules, the employer sets the working time.
- A day can only move within the same calendar month, and a Sunday cannot become a working day.
- In 2026, for example, three Saturdays were working days — 10 January, 8 August and 12 December — in return for days off on 2 January, 21 August and 24 December2.
When the 2027 decree is published, the calendar and this page will be updated.
Will 24 December be a public holiday?
In short
Not yet. Bill T/714, filed on 23 September 2026, would make 24 December a permanent public holiday3. If it passes, 24–26 December 2027, Friday to Sunday, will all be holidays, and Hungary will have 12 public holidays.
- The law would take effect the day after it is published; according to the bill’s reasoning, it would already cover 24 December 2026.
- Shops would stay closed all day on 24 December, except restaurants, hotels, florists, sweet shops, petrol stations and shops at stations and airports. Today shops may open until 2 pm.
- Until the bill passes, 24 December is a working day unless the transfer decree makes it a day off.
Working days and hours
In short
254 working days and 111 weekend days and holidays, or 2,032 hours at eight hours a day. January, February, March and May have the fewest working days (20), December the most (23).

The general full working day is eight hours, and the general schedule runs Monday to Friday (Mt. 92 (1), 97 (2))1. The calculator counts the working days and hours of any period:
How much paid leave do you get?
In short
20 working days of basic leave, plus extra days for age — up to 10 from age 45 — and 2, 4 or 7 days for children. Leave is counted in working days, so weekends and holidays do not use it up.
| From age | Extra leave |
|---|---|
| 25 | 1 day |
| 28 | 2 days |
| 31 | 3 days |
| 33 | 4 days |
| 35 | 5 days |
| 37 | 6 days |
| 39 | 7 days |
| 41 | 8 days |
| 43 | 9 days |
| 45 | 10 days |
- Extra days for age are due for the whole year in which you reach that age (Mt. 116–117)1.
- For children: 2 days for one child, 4 for two, 7 for three or more, and 2 more for each child with a disability. A child counts from the year of birth until the end of the year they turn 16. Both working parents get these days (118).
- Young workers get 5 more days, for the last time in the year they turn 18. Workers with reduced working capacity or entitled to disability support or the blind persons’ allowance also get 5 more days (119–120).
- Paternity leave: 10 working days by the end of the fourth month after the birth. Parental leave: 44 working days until the child turns three, after a year in the job (118 (4), 118/A).
- If you start during the year, you get a share of the leave; half a day or more counts as a full day (121).
How leave is scheduled
In short
The employer schedules leave, but you choose the dates of 7 working days a year — in up to two parts, with 15 days’ notice. Once a year you get at least 14 days off in a row, and leave is due in the year it is earned.
- You cannot choose those 7 days in the first three months of the job (Mt. 122 (2))1. Extra leave for children and parental leave are also given when you ask for them.
- The employer announces the start of your leave at least 15 days ahead (122 (4)).
- Weekends and public holidays count towards the 14 days unless agreed otherwise (122 (3)).
- Leave carries over only in some cases: if the job started on 1 October or later (until 31 March), if you could not take it for your own reasons (within 60 days after they end), a quarter of it under a collective agreement (until 31 March), and age-related extra days by agreement (until the end of the next year) (123).
- Leave can be paid out only when the job ends (122 (5), 125).
When to take leave in 2027
In short
At Easter: 22–25 March, 4 days of leave for 10 days off (20–29 March). Four days of leave also give nine days off around Whitsun, 20 August and All Saints’ Day. Add 16–19 March, and 8 days of leave give 17 days off, 13 to 29 March.
- Take 22 – 25 March off 10 days off4 days of leave, off 20 – 29 March
- Take 18 – 21 May off 9 days off4 days of leave, off 15 – 23 May
- Take 16 – 19 August off 9 days off4 days of leave, off 14 – 22 August
- Take 2 – 5 November off 9 days off4 days of leave, off 30 October – 7 November
In January, 5 days of leave (4–8 January) give ten days off from New Year’s Day to 10 January. Enter the first day and the length of your leave, and the planner shows how long the break lasts:
Wage supplements
In short
+100% on a public holiday, +50% or time off for overtime, +100% for overtime on a weekly rest day (+50% with another rest day), +15% at night. The base is the hourly wage: monthly base wage ÷ 174.
| When | Supplement | Mt. |
|---|---|---|
| Public holidays, Easter Sunday and Whit Sunday | 100% | 140 (2)–(3) |
| Sundays in multi-shift, on-call and retail jobs | 50% | 140 (1) |
| Overtime on a working day | 50% or time off | 143 (2) |
| Overtime on a weekly rest day | 100%, or 50% with another rest day | 143 (4) |
| Overtime on a public holiday | 100% | 143 (5) |
| Night work from 10 pm to 6 am, over an hour | 15% | 142 |
| Regularly changing shift starts, 6 pm to 6 am | 30% | 141 |
- Supplements are paid on top of the wage. For the hourly base on a full-time job, the monthly base wage is divided by 174 (Mt. 139)1.
- Public holidays are paid: a monthly wage is not reduced, and hourly-paid workers get absence pay for a holiday on a weekday (146 (1) d).
- The contract can set a base wage that already includes the Sunday, shift and night supplements (145).
Overtime and rest
In short
Employers can order 250 hours of overtime a year, plus 150 hours by written agreement (voluntary overtime), or 300 + 100 hours under a collective agreement. Each week brings two rest days or 48 hours of rest in a row, with at least 11 hours between working days.
- The overtime limits are set by Mt. 109 and 135 (3)1, weekly rest by 105–106 and daily rest by 104.
- At least one weekly rest day a month must be a Sunday (105 (4)).
- Regular work on a public holiday is allowed only in some cases: where the employer or the job operates on that day by its nature, in seasonal or continuous work, in services meeting public needs and when working abroad (102 (2)).
- No overtime may be ordered from a confirmed pregnancy until the child turns three, for single parents until the child turns three, or for young workers (113, 114 (5)).
Sick leave
In short
15 working days of sick leave a year at 70% of absence pay, paid by the employer. After that, social security pays sickness benefit.
- If the job starts during the year, you get a share of the sick leave (Mt. 126, 146 (3))1.
- There is no sick leave for a workplace accident, an occupational disease or a high-risk pregnancy: social security pays from the first day (126 (2)).
